5 facts and planning for a break

As you probably know if you are on Blogger, Google Reader is going to disappear on July 1, and I’ve heard that the Blogger reading list may go away, too.
So I’ve joined BlogLovin as a back-up. Please join me by clicking on the BlogLovin’ icon down on the right side of the page, right under the Facebook icon. Thank you!
I’m joining Nancy at A Rural Journal for Random 5 Friday. I didn’t do it last week, and I missed it!
If you’d like to join in, link up at A Rural Journal.

Dock at Leesville Lake.

One
When I first moved back to Virginia after grad school, I was an adjunct English instructor at some local colleges.
Recently, via Facebook, one of my former students from the community college where I taught got in touch with me. He wrote in part, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought of your class or enjoyed your influence over the last 20 years or so. I wanted to let you know that your encouragement meant a great deal to me then and that I did in fact achieve a number of my educational and life goals afterwards.”
He made my day.
Have you ever received an encouraging message just when you needed one?

Two
I am afraid of snakes. All snakes. Deathly afraid. I think I have a definite phobia.
Larry saw the first snake of the season this week, a long black snake. He said it was headed away from our yard, across the street.
I didn’t even like hearing that he had seen one. He reminded me that they are all around us. I know that. But I don’t like to think about it.
Are you afraid of snakes?

Three
Lately, I have been eating a little seafood and a bit of chicken. I thought that perhaps my body was missing some vitamins and minerals and that eating some fish might help my foot heal.
I have especially enjoyed eating salmon. I ate a piece on my birthday last week that melted in my mouth.
I am not completely comfortable with what I’m doing. I became a vegetarian because of my beliefs about animals.
I’m not ready to decide to keep eating seafood and poultry permanently. But for now I am mostly vegetarian, not completely.
I’m reading and pondering, taking it a step at a time.

Four
I go back to my orthopedic doctor about my fractured foot on June 14. I hope I can get rid of the boot for good. It is heavy and awkward. And I’ve had pain in my opposite hip, knee and foot, from too much pressure on them, I think.
I may have to wear a fracture shoe for a little while.
And then I’m so ready to wear two matching shoes and to take a long walk.

Five
I’m allergic to tree nuts. Today I attended a business luncheon. On the buffet were croissants stuffed with what I thought was tuna salad. When I picked it one to eat it, I realized it was chicken salad when I saw the large walnuts in it. I gave it away to a tablemate.
Back at the office in the afternoon, I was offered a chocolate chip cookie one of my co-workers had bought and left for the rest of us. I nibbled at the edges. Then my boss, who was also eating one, said, “Tina, I think this has nuts in it.” We looked closely and saw walnuts. So I gave the cookie to him.
Not a good food day, but at least I didn’t eat any of the nuts.
Are you allergic to any foods?

I’ve decided to take next week off from blogging. I will be very busy at work with my boss out of town.
And I am feeling the need for some downtime with the blog writing. I need some rejuvenation.
I will be reading your blogs as much as I can. And I’ll be back writing on Monday, June 17.
Hopefully, I’ll be inspired during my time off and come back full of ideas.
I’ll miss you and your comments! Take care, dear readers, until next time.

  1. Hi Tina ~~ Enjoy your time off from blogging. I have cut back to weakends and Fridays' myself until I get some things caught up.

I like your spelling out the topic numbers being written out. It makes things easy to find. I will try this next week.

I have had two former students find me out and tell me ALL KINDS OF GOOD THINGS my class(es) did for them. One invited me to be his FB friend. Yes, it makes one feel good.

I hope the doc says that your foot is healing good. My doc wanted to REBUILD my foot but I told him "no." Humoring hurt feet is not fun, is it? I had to be on crutches and a boot once in Las Vegas when our daughter got married.

    I don't like snakes.
I'd love to be a veggie and let the animals live. I feel sooo sorry for the little piggys in the trucks on their way to market.
I'm not allergic to nuts but my colon is. That is the pits.

    1. Hi, Jim, thank you for your comment. That's wonderful that students have gotten in touch with you. It is indeed a good feeling to find out you had a good influence on someone else. I was on crutches for a while along with the boot, and no, it is not fun.

  2. It is always good to take a break, so enjoy and don't work too hard. I've no allergies but have a friend (11) who is allergic to nuts. My Uncle was terribly afraid of snakes, I am not. Good luck at the Orthopod with getting the boot off. I love salmon!

    1. Thanks, Lynn. I'm glad you're not afraid of snakes. It's an awful feeling to be afraid of an animal. I love salmon, too!

  3. Oh shoot... I still haven't had a back-up plan yet. Maybe it's time I get into Blog Lovin' as well.

Enjoy the week off... your readers will be here waiting for you.

  4. Hearing from your former student was wonderful - you should feel very proud of your achievement. I don't have any known food allergies and feel fortunate - I think it must be difficult having to worry about unknown ingredients in food. I'm not fond of snakes, but I don't feel scared of them, either - of course here in New England we don't really have any poisonous ones. Have a nice weekend.

    1. Thanks, Karen. It was such a nice thing to hear from my former student.

I hate asking people if nuts are in their dishes, if I'm at a potluck or something. I feel like it makes me sound like a picky eater. But I have to do it to avoid the nuts.

Snakes..I think it all started when as a child I learned in Sunday School that they were Satanic, ha ha :)

    1. Thanks, Debra. Hmmm, maybe learning the story of Satan as snake started my fears. :-)

  8. I don't know of any foods that I am allergic to although milk makes me cough a bit... probably lactose intolerant. OH, and snakes affect me in the exact same way. We have far too many of those rascals here in Virginia.

    1. Thanks, Diane. Milk makes my stomach rumble. Doesn't suit me too well. And, yes, too many snakes around here! We have lots of trees around us and woods behind us.

  10. Enjoy your Blogcation, Tina! I hope your foot heals soon. I tried the Veg thing sort of for a couple years, but found I just enjoy being an Omnivore too much...(Sunday breakfasts at Mom & Dad's back then kept me firmly in the omnivore ranks).

    1. Thank you. I like that word--blogcation. I may come back permanently to the ranks of the omnivore. I'm struggling with the decision.

  13. Hi Tina, I'm thinking about taking a cyperspace break (!!!) -- blog and FB. I think it would be good for me to see just how much time I spend doing those things! How wonderful that a student reached out to you. I'm not in love with snakes, but not afraid. I don't have any food allergies -- thank goodness. Good luck with your foot -- hope your appointment goes well.

  19. Tina,

    I'll miss reading your posts!

I love that e-mail you got from a former student!

I'm so ready for you to be out of that boot too!

I am afraid of snakes.... but you probably already know that about me ;-)

I've read about this business with google reader going away and it makes me nervous. This is a silly question I'm sure but how do I know if I'm using Google reader? When I log into blogger, under "Elizabeth's Blog," I have my "Reading List" and that is where all my favorite blogs that I follow are listed. Is that google reader? I don't want to lose all my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Elizabeth. Remember--there are no silly questions! :-) I just found out within the last day or so that Google Reader is different from the Blogger reading list. Google Reader, which I don't even use, will go away July 1. But I've heard that the Blogger reading list, which is what comes up when you log into Blogger, may eventually go away. So that's why I went ahead and did BlogLovin'. I still have my Blogger reading list--I didn't lose it by joining BlogLovin'.

  21. I so love nuts that I always feel bad for people who can't eat them. But someday I might wake up with an allergy, too. One never knows. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy them as much as I can. Hope you get to wear matching shoes soon!!

    1. Thanks, Barb. I never liked nuts very much, but I could eat them. When I was in my 20s, though, I was at a Christmas party and ate some and my lips swelled to huge proportions. Haven't been able to eat them since.

  24. Oh I am definitely not fond of snakes...creepy crawling yikes!! What a sweet message you received from your former student. It does make you feel really good to receive nice comments like that!! Too bad about nuts, I love them. Good luck on getting out of that boot...must be miserable!!

  25. Enjoy your time off! Good for you for taking care of yourself.

Don't worry about the seafood thing. I was a vegetarian for seven years, but there came a time when my body needed animal protein, so I had to eat it. It sounds like your intuitive self is taking care of you and letting you know that you need something different. Hopefully when the foot heals, you'll be able to go back to your preferred way of eating.

"See" you on the blogosphere when you get back!

    1. Thanks, Nadine. I do think my body was telling me I needed the added protein. I had not been craving meat at all. Then I started wanting to try some.

  27. Gosh, you have had a time of it with your foods. I'm so glad you were OK even with the cookie and croissant. I'm not afraid of snakes..or any other creepy crawly but I'm uneasy with knives. Can't have them pointing at me. Have a lovely weekend, and, as you're having the next week off, have a lovely next week too.

    1. Thank you, Veronica. I'd like to reach a point where I have a healthier view of snakes and not be so afraid. I don't like watching movies where knives are used as a weapon--scary.

  29. No food allergies for me. I love nuts! My neighbor's son has a nut allergy. I can't imagine how hard it must be, they pop up in so many foods. I've not been around snakes much. My dad used to tell of a time when I was little and helping him in the garden, I pointed out to him "a worm and it looks mean."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Patti. I love that--a worm that looks mean. So cute! Yes, nuts are in so many commercially processed foods. My husband doesn't like to buy me candy for fear there may be nuts in it.

  30. I hope you have a good, restful, rejuvenating break, Tina!

Salmon is delicious and so is halibut. But i see what you mean about not being sure what to do about your diet. I've thought about becoming vegetarian, but i'd have a very hard time going without meat. I love animals though, so i'm not sure how i make the decision in my mind that eating meat is okay?? There are Michael Pollan's many books on the subject of food. Have you read any of his. One of my favorites is 'Omnimvore's Dilemma'. It's excellent and educational.. Have a good week!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Mary. It is not easy, choosing foods that fit with our values. I've started 'Omnivore's Dilemma,' and, yes, it's very good and educational. I'm reading several books at once, so I'm behind on that one.
