I want my normal house back!

It’s not even over yet, and already I want my house back.
It’s in disarray. Things are out of place. And there’s a feeling of anticipation in the air, the feeling that it’s only going to get worse.
On Friday, the HVAC contractor came to the house and measured and looked around and decided where the hole in the ceiling for the new heat pump would go.
They are coming back today to take out the old pump and install the new. At least we hope they’re going to complete the process today.

This new heat pump is larger than the one we have now. Plus, Larry wants to install those attic steps. So the new, larger hole has to be in a different part of the ceiling: right where we have a bookcase full of books and my keyboard.
OK. I can deal with that, I thought.
It’s a heavy bookcase, made heavier with more books than the bookcase should hold. We’d have to pack up the books before we could move the bookcase.

This isn't the usual home for the keyboard.

On Saturday, Larry was going to cut the hole in the ceiling, do the prep work for putting in the attic steps, and get me to help him install the steps.
He had been working for a while when I went into the den. The keyboard was gone. It was now in the futon room/my office. On the floor in the den, there were pieces of plaster and plaster dust all over the large dust cloth covering half the room. Tools lay everywhere.
I didn’t say anything. I just walked out of the room. And took some deep breaths.

I don’t do well with chaos or even semi-chaos. I like things to be somewhat orderly. But I told myself I’d be able to get through a few days of things being upside down.

Chase Bird feels left out.

Poor Chase Bird was not very happy either. We needed to keep him out of the den while dust was flying and dangerous tools were lying about. So we closed the French door between the futon room and the living room, keeping him safe (or trapped, in his mind, I believe) in the other part of the house.

The measurements provided by the contractor didn’t seem to line up with where Larry thought the joists were. So he reluctantly decided to wait until Monday, when the contractor returned, to finish the hole. He taped up what he had done with duct tape.

It looks like we're in the midst of moving.

I packed books. And packed. And packed. Larry put the boxes on a hand truck and moved them to the foyer in the front of the house. Thirteen boxes of books. And that’s from only one of four bookcases/shelves in the house. Plus, I have many books packed up in boxes already.

We carefully folded up the dust cloth so Larry could take it outside while I picked up pieces of plaster.

My grandfather built this bookcase. My father refurbished it when he and my mother gave it to me.

Then we allowed Chase Bird to come back in the room. He jumped up on the now-empty bookcase. I wonder if he thinks it’s now a bunk bed for cats?
To me, the empty bookcase looks sad. It’s waiting for the books to come back.
I’m waiting to get my house back.

Do you operate well in semi-chaos? How do you cope when you have to live in the midst of a work-in-progress?

  1. I love the look of your business site and big Congratulations you've done it :-) :-). I do okay with messes, and manage to ignore the state of the house if there is a reasonable end in sight .

  2. i am horrible at messes and chaos, just horrible!! i was so miserable when we had the new roof put on, the skylights replaced (5 total). it was a real mess because all the sheetrock had to be cut to accept the new skylights. men in and out of the house all day, peeing, checking shit, checking fans in the attic. then once the roof was done, we had to repair the ceilings in the house. we had 10+ leaks.

but now it's all done, we scrubbed the house from top to bottom and i could not be happier!!

  3. NO, I like things orderly too. I hope you are back to normal soon.. At Chase Bird is happier now. Wishing you a happy week ahead!

  4. I also like things to be orderly, but as I get older, I'm able to handle chaos better, especially if renovations mean a better outcome ahead. Hang in there!

  5. Hopefully things are back to normal soon. And poor Chase Bird - yes he probably views it as "trapped" in his mind :)

I sometimes do well in semi-chaos and sometimes don't. I like things to be quiet and harmonious and calm though for the most part :)

  6. There is a reason I have some peeling paint on my ceiling and why I haven't repainted (apart from the choosing a color and the paint-first or rug-first dilemma.) It's called bookcases and shelving around the walls. I can't cope with the idea of unloading the shelves and cupboards and taking everything out of the china cabinet. I suspect I would purge a good deal along the way if I did... Good luck with that. Just remember, this too will pass.

  10. I just don't see mess or dirt. However I know somebody who dislikes chaos and mess intensely so I have an idea of how you feel about your renovation.
Good luck with the renovation and I hope it's over quickly.

  11. Orderliness is my middle name. I can't stand disorder of any kind. When we were having our kitchen wallpaper stripped and the whole room repainted, I'd get a knot in my stomach each time I entered. But then I would remind myself how pretty is was going to look in just a few days. Same with floor replacement. Just have to keep thinking forward. Very hard in the chaos, though. Hang in there!

  13. The website looks great! I'm excited for you!

I hate chaos. About a year and half ago, we remodeled our lower floor and built backyard terraces to smooth out a fairly steep slope. For months on end we had workmen in our home, banging and clanging and making a mess. I couldn't do much in the garden that year, either. Drove me nuts! We decided to get it all done at once so we would just have to deal with the chaos one time.

  14. Hi Tina, I sympathise. As you can imagine, with my OCD being based on a need for order and symmetry, this is my idea of a nightmare! Years ago, I had my flat painted and was just about holding it together - with my belongings all out of place and decorating equipment everywhere - until the decorator said the work was going to take a couple of days longer than expected and run into a second week. I'd been banking on getting things back to normal over the weekend and was distraught at having to tolerate another 4 days of mess! And, to cap it all, when I finally got to the point of cleaning up, I backed the vacuum cleaner into the bathroom wall, putting a mark in the fresh paint...

  15. Oh Tina -- I feel for you! But I have to say my house is always in some state of upheaval -- always one or more projects going on and of course, there's the lack of a basement and running our trapping company out of our house so... it could be much worse my dear. :)

  16. I don't like chaos (does anybody)? but if I know it's temporary, I can deal with it. Your website is great. Good luck with your business!

I think you are handling the chaos admirably . . . I sincerely doubt I'd do as well.

  20. I am having a hard time getting my comment published so if you get more than one please delete the others. Anyway, no I do not handle chaos well. If it involves leaking water and a plumber I am at wits end. Hope all goes smoothly for you and the work is done quickly.

  21. It's so hard to live through any kind of "inside" work....I have several times but I do enjoy the end results.....Hang in there....I know you treasure the bookcase your grandfather made; it's just beautiful....

  22. I must be one of those who thrive on chaos, as my home is always chaotic. Something about 3 kids and 2 big dogs... Good luck with the heat pump replacement and install. And yes that book case looks lovely and lonely at the same time.

  23. I'm sorry things have been delayed, but it will soon be over and you'll be glad to have things working well again.

  24. Oh I can soooo relate. When my environment is in disorder...I feel that "I" am in disorder too.

  25. I don't do well in chaos, and it seemed it took forever to get my house back to normal after Christmas, I can imagine how upsetting all this must be, it will soon be over and your treasured books will be back where they belong.

  26. I hate chaos but with four kids--some of them still college-aged and living at home--chaos seems to be the order of the day. I deal with it better now than when my kids were small. I think this is God's way of telling me to stop being a control freak and worrying about everything. It's still hard though. If I had things my way, there would be no clutter and no messes. ... I hope the new heat pump gets installed soon and works well. And hopefully the stairs won't be a difficult task either. Enjoy the snowfall my friend.

  27. I really dislike home improvements or renovations, but at the end of the day, it's all worth it! I just go with the flow, and know that at some point, things will be back to "normal".
