Signs of autumn

I’ve been noticing sometimes-subtle signs of approaching autumn where I live, and I thought I’d share them with you.

*Leaves are beginning to change color.

*An abundance of acorns are falling from the oak trees.

*There are more deer in our yard eating the acorns.

*I spotted a squirrel running along this morning with an acorn in his mouth. Was he on his way to bury it for winter?

*It’s been humid here the last several days, but we’re having more days with less humidity and clarity to the air.

*School buses are a regular sight on the roads again.

*Political signs are popping up in people’s lawns.

*Fall decorations are up in a couple of businesses I’ve visited lately.

Autumn is my favorite season, and I’m looking forward to more full-fledged signs of it, including the beautiful changing of the leaves with the golds, yellows and reds. I love “sweater weather” when it’s cool in the morning and evening and a sweater feels good.

What is autumn like where you live? Are you seeing signs of it yet?

  1. I love Autumn too!! It's one of my four favorite seasons, LOL! Thank you for the beautiful photos. Trees on the mountainsides here in northern Utah are starting to turn color. I can't wait for frosty mornings with warm afternoons - and crunching through fallen leaves on my walks! It is a wonderful prelude to the beauty of winter!

But it does makes me sad to see Christmas items already displayed on store shelves (oh yes, I did see them)... let us celebrate the glory of Autumn first, please!!

    1. Oh, I agree--it's too early to see Christmas items!

I love cold mornings and warm afternoons, and then cool evenings to follow.

  2. I love Autumn! In England, I feel the crisp air now and have been raking leaves for about 2 weeks already! I love it, there's something about the change in seasons that changes my mood for the better. I love it!

    Nice pics.

    1. Thank you, Yaya. We haven't had to rake leaves yet, but it's coming. I think that's one thing we could do without in the fall! :-)

  3. Autumn is my favorite season too. I look forward to it all year long.

I have started to kick around acorns on the sidewalks.

I haven't seen any political signs in my neighbors yards yet but I'm sure that will come.

    I love love love fall.

That is so neat that you have deer in your yard!

    1. Yes, the deer make regular trips to eat at the Barbour Buffet! :-)

    2. Oh, you offer a buffet also? We've decided that the deer offer more pleasure than the prospect of home grown peaches, apples, etc. It is fun to watch the various bandits working in collaboration. The squirrels do most of the actual harvesting. They climb to the very top, nibble, & drop as much as they actually run off with. The groundhog waits happily beneath the tree, and the deer stand on hind legs to pick fruit, then glean what the squirrels have dropped.
As a townie I can enjoy this perspective. Of course battling to protect hostas & roses (deer candy) gives me some small perspective on how farmers must feel. Those beautiful deer even enjoy my prickly evergreen ground cover. They pick up a stem, shake off the dirt, and nibble happily. No wonder we still have a red mud bank after 14 years.
Do the twin fawns visit your buffet? They are so beautiful, & still have their spots.

    4. Carolyn, We have seen the mother and fawn with spots, but we haven't seen twins. I bet they're beautiful! We have the wily groundhogs, too, and the sqirrels--it is so fun to watch them. We tried growing tomatoes one year, and I think we got one good one off of several plants. They were enjoyed by the wildlife community, though.

  4. Ah, autumn in New England! Truly my favorite season. Most years, the trees are just ablaze with color - particularly around bodies of water. As I drive about to do my errands, I will just marvel and look at all the colors and think about how creative God is and about how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place. I've read that the only other place in the world that has as brilliant an autumn as New England is in Japan. On my bucket list to go there!

Some of the trees are just starting to change. I was in someone's yard the other day and noticed a virtual carpet of acorns everywhere! The air is starting to get a just a little crisper here too. Love it!

I'd like to visit Japan, too!

  5. I love autumn too, but in SoCal it's much less dramatic than when we lived in Aspen where the colors exploded in a grand celebration each year. Here it's subtle; the best indicator is the hum of children going off to school and a slight crispness in the air.

  7. You DO have signs of autumn over there! Here, not so much! The leaves are the same, and the weather is pretty warm still. I cannot wait until the weather cools off a bit and the leaves change! It is my favorite time of year!

  8. It's autumn already up here where i live too! Our leaves are falling off. We live in a woodsy area in the country and i love the fall drives to and from the city, looking at the hills ablaze with colours! Autumn is the promise of cozy days curled up on the couch in a blanket with a book coming soon.

  9. Having lived in areas of the country where the climate did not change much, I have discovered my renewed love for Autumn the past few years. I think my first peak at Spring is always amazing but we almost skip Spring anymore and go straight into a hot Summer. So Autumn is the best of weather for us with warm afternoons and cool evenings and mornings. I definitely see the trees changing and the corn fields have gone from dark green to golden so I know the farmers will begin collecting that very soon, some already have.
My husbands family has an apple orchard, so this is the time of year we go help pick apples and make apple cider.

  11. Autumn is my favorite season also, especially in New England (as Sunny says)! I haven't experienced Autumn in four years, as we were living in FL while Dan was in school. I just can't wait for those vibrant colors. Apple picking here has already started!

  12. Autumn is hot here in San Diego. At least in the late part of August and Early fall, but it signals the cooler weather to come. And I love it when it is in the 60's and 70's. A light sweater or jacket and everything feels right.

... we hardly have any signs of fall here in FL. except for the coolness of a good breeze just before the gray clouds are about to rain on us!!!
    I Love fall too!

  16. Ah Autumn, lovely season. You can see the changes beginning in the leaves and it has got colder-jackets needed at night and some days during the day. Thoughts of heating needed to go on again and changing back to a heavier duvet. Daylight hours getting less and blinds drawn earlier in the night. The sun is losing it's warmth. Thank you for sharing your Autumn sights.
