Random 5 Friday: The last day of January

Happy Friday to you on this last day of January! Can you believe the first month of 2014 is almost over? It seems to have flown by.
I’m joining Nancy of A Rural Journal for Random 5 Friday. Check out Nancy’s blog to find more posts where bloggers share their random facts.

Snow on the camellia bush.

One
We had another snowfall this week. We were supposed to get mostly flurries in our area, but we got more than that.
The roads were treacherous Tuesday night. I had to work at the newspaper office into the evening, but Larry came to the office and followed me home in case I had trouble getting up any of the hills. I made it fine, but it was nice knowing he was behind me.

Two
My work week at the newspaper wasn’t as hectic as I thought it would be. A trial set for Wednesday went to a plea last Friday.

Three
My schedule seems to be different every week and can change at the last minute. That makes it hard to have a lot of week-to-week routine.
I am working on finding a more peaceful morning routine. It’s hard for me to get up early before it’s light outside, but I feel so much better when I get an early start.
I have got to stop hitting that snooze button.
What time do you get up in the morning?

Four
My skin is suffering from the cold, dry air of winter. My hands look like claws. They’re not like they were when washing OCD ruled my habits, but they are dry and rough. I have dry patches on my face, too.
I probably don’t put enough lotion on. I don’t like the thick feeling of too much lotion, and it seems to make my face oily if I’m not careful.
What lotion do you use for dry skin? Do you know of anything that moisturizes without leading to breakouts?

Five
Chase Bird loves to curl up in small, dark, warm spaces, especially during the day. To accommodate him, we arrange a kitty blanket over different chairs, wherever he’s hanging out, so he can hide away and sleep.

Here’s one we fixed in the den. It’s where Larry usually sits when he’s watching TV. But he gives up the chair for his Chase Bird.

  1. You don't know what time I get up in the morning, Tina. :) Seriously, right now my mornings are practically nil due to difficulties with sleeping at night. When morning comes I am so exhausted. My doctor is looking at all aspects with me to try and find out why I am so tired like this. It isn't me. I used to be a morning person, "up and at 'em Adam" type of individual, but for the last several months it is the total opposite.

Your show photo and Chase bird photo are both delightful!

  2. Chase bird is adorable! My alarm goes off at 5am - I try to get up shortly after that - ugh - I'm sooooo not a morning person. I need to be better about it, though - I desperately need to find some gym time in my day. Have a nice weekend!

  3. Great guy you have there! :)

My hands are bad in the winter... so I use a heavy Neutregena Hand Cream / just don't remember to use it enough :)

  4. LOVE the kitty photo!!
As for me and mornings...long ago, before retirement, and having to get up for the going to work routine, I continually hit the snooze button and then rushed around the house to get stuff readied and off to work before I was late getting there! It WAS a stressful time. Now, now that I can actually sleep in to any hour, I'd much prefer getting up before the sun does...it's so quiet, relaxing part of my day!

  5. I'm usually up by 5 (am). I get most of my house chores done and have the rest of the day to play. Stay safe on those roads -- no fun driving in the snow and ice. My skin has been extra dry, too. I'm using Avon Skin so Soft ... better than nothing. Chase Bird has a good idea ... cuddle up and under!

  6. Cute photo of Chase Bird. ;)) I was just looking at my fingers a few minutes before I read your comment about dry you hands are. Yep, mine need lotion! I usually get up about 5:30am but this morning I slept in till 6:30, probably because I was awake for awhile in the middle of the night.

  7. Love the photo of Chase Bird. I LOVE the mornings I seem to enjoy it more every day. Lotion I have been using Aveeno seems to work for me but I tend to just grab what is on sale, sorry not much help. I heard honey works and I have tried it but my paper kept sticking to my hand:) but my hands were softer.
Nice that Larry came to follow you home Driving has been a challenge here lately too. Drifts up to the hood of my Jeep. Have a nice end of January hug B

  8. We got a lot of snow here in central KY. About 5 inches! It was awesome. And I am with you on feeling better when you get an early start. I am always in such a god mood when I get up really early. I love the start of the day.

  9. I try not to hit snooze. It just disrupts my sleep cycle too much. I get up about 10min before DH leaves for work usually.

For dry skin I am liking Gold Bond Diabetic Skin Care lotion. It really seems to help my winter-dry hands.

Our dog Shiloh is a blanket snurgler like Chase Bird. The little Diva wakes me up usually once a night to cover her back up!

  10. I usually get up around 7 or 7:30. I am thankful that I don't have to follow an alarm and that I can sleep later if I wish. One perk of being old!

  11. chase bird is loving his 'free' life. :)

i use nivea lotions. but right now my hands are chapped, too. up/down weather.

  12. I get up at varying times...I never go to bed before 2:00, and sometimes 3:00 or 3:30....it doesn't bother me as bad to sleep in till 8:30 or so in the winter, but in the summer, I like to get up by 7:00 or 7:30...and this morn was up at 7:30. When I worked at the orchard, in summer when I knew what I would be doing the next day and that was most of the time, I would get up and be at work at 6:30 till I would be about done by the time the heat of the evening hit. I, too, function better if I get up early.

I don't use lotion much...if my hands get real bad, I really put the hand lotion to them...just whatever Roger has on hand, stick them in rubber gloves and then do dishes in hot water. It works wonders for them. Another thing that helps is to not use paper towels for drying my hands..use towel when possible, but I know that that is not possible when you work.

I think all cats like snuggly places....

  13. I get up at 7:00 AM. I don't use an alarm and so I don't have a snooze button. Every night I used to tell myself to get up at 7:00 AM. Now I don't tell myself when to wake up.

  14. Chase Bird is loving his space you created for him...you can just see happy on his face....I have very dry skin...I mean very....and the dermatologist recommended Amlactin and it does work. I get it at CVS. I also put Nutragena oil on after a bath.....even with doing both, I can't miss a day or my skin is akin to a alligators....Have a good weekend....

  15. Well, right now I'm not working, so my morning routine is dictated by when the dogs need to be let out. But I remember hitting snooze a lot when I was working. How nice of your hubby to follow you in the hazardous conditions. What a sweetheart!

  16. I'm not a morning person! One thing I like about being retired is that I can sleep in! My hands are like sandpaper from the cold, but my feet are actually worse. Chase Bird looks so cute in his "fort"!

  17. Now you can't use it on your face (it would cause breakouts) but for the rest of the body I love Dermasil. You can get it at the Dollar tree, and it's creamy and really helps with the itching. I use it on my boys too. It also has a very mild smell, which is not too strong.

  18. i agree with you skin - i have had issues in the past with winter dryness & all ... but this year is very terrible. i feel itchy & just plain not good. i keep wondering how others deal with it. i guess i shower & wash my hair less hoping the oils will do me some good. not sure what the right thing to do? i try to wear gloves when i wash dishes ... etc. ( :

  19. I love any early start to the day. I am usually up around 5 a.m. I would prefer to sleep until 6:30-7:00 but that never seems to happen.

  20. I can't seem to get my arse out of bed before 10:00 lately ... and it frustrates the daylights out of me!
I would love to be up and at 'em by 8:00 but to me ... lately ... that seems like 4:00 a.m.! LOL
This winter air has been awful ... my skin is also dry and so very itchy!!! I use baby oil in the shower ... but I'm still dry and itchy! :-(
    Have a nice weekend

  21. I hate alarm clocks so I never set one. I generally wake by 7:00 unless I'm really tired.
I too am ready for warmer weather. We got SNOW today!
I don't use enough lotion either (but should) a good one is, Cetaphil. It's expensive but doesn't have perfumes to irritate the skin.
Love how you make little hiding spots for Chase Bird, how cute!

  22. With lotions I try to stick with the organic/natural ones. I stay away from any that have the parabens or sulfites or anything else I can't pronounce.

  23. I'm wondering if Chase Bird has some Siamese blood? They like to hide under the covers. :)

  24. Both your photos are fabulous - But, the second one makes me laugh . . what we do to insure our creatures are content.

    nice.

  25. you need to retire so you can have more fun!! your snow image is just beautiful!! have a happy weekend!!

  26. My hands are like parchment too! I'm not a winter person at all. Love that photo of Chase Bird. Came home to one of Morgan's white paws sticking out of a paper bag on the floor and the paper, which was in the bag, strewn all over the floor. Someone had fun...lol. Have a wonderful weekend Tina. :)

  27. Chase Bird is just so adorable! I want to reach into the photo and give him a big hug!

I try to get up by 7 am, but in wintertime, that's difficult. I'm so looking forward to longer days.

  28. #3, i set my alarm for 6:20 in the mornings so that i can sit here on the computer and wake up with my coffee and blogs! i wake the boys up at 7:30 and that's the time nick gets up too...i have to have my quiet morning to myself. but like you, i can't get out of bed while it's still dark :)

  29. Try Oil of Olay's IN SHOWER lotion (I think the container is kind of goldish/beigish). You put it on after you rinse off the soap and let it sit for a minute -- I usually keep it on about the time it takes to rinse my hair. I even use it on my face. Try something long to get it on your back (My friend Kate uses one of those net shower things on a stick and puts a sock over it so the stuff stays on top). I have terrible winter skin and that is the ONLY thing that helps. And it helps A LOT!

  30. I usually wake up before 7:00, but many mornings I do not have to be anywhere so it's nice to not have to rush into the day. I use Olay products and have always been happy with them without any problems. And how nice that Larry came to make sure you made it home safely!!

  31. Good luck to you and your endeavours.

Thank you. Love love, Andrew. Bye.

  32. Chase Bird knows how to handle the winter! I have very dry skin, too, and suffered for years with cracked fingers in the winter until I quit using anti-bacterial soap. I use Dr. Bronner's now and it seems to help even though my skin is much worse this time of year, but my fingers are intact. And I use Aveeno. It's not expensive and it works for me.
